Wild Foods

Yesterday Room 9 went to Puke Ariki for a visit to learn about Wild Foods.  Hoani took us to a garden outside the museum to show us different plants that we can eat. When we got back inside the classroom we ground up dry kawakawa leaves to make a mixture for tea. It smelt great.

I have wanted to know more about wild foods. I like eating mushrooms but I am always a bit worried about whether I might be eating a wild mushroom or a poisonous one!!! Some restaurants use fern shoots for their menu.

Thank you Mrs Cribb for your comment :) Did you know that people use to eat the bracken fern root? If you have it on its own it tastes like dry weetbix. The Maori people didn't like that so they would mix wild berries and honey with it. Bracken fern was replaced by potatoes because it was easier to grow and cook. Sorry I couldn't answer your question about mushrooms we didn't talk about fern fronds either.
